How would you evolve Community Server?
Last week, at the In.Telligent conference I gave the keynote on our product roadmap. It’s rare that I have so many customers captive in one room so I used the opportunity to gather some feedback in real time. I distributed a list of features broken out by theme and told everyone they had $100 virtual dollars to distribute between the features.
I excluded most of what we have planned for CS 2009 in February to get a little more forward looking. I promised I would post the results on this blog. Here is the breakout…
It verified a lot of things we’ve assumed. When we looked closer at the breakout it was clear:
- Mobile is hot. Everyone wants visitors to take their communities with them.
- Calendars were seen as a critical tool that enables people to link virtual interactions to the real world. Group calendars, event management, & calendar synchronization were all in the top 5.
- Conference goers didn’t consider social tools in the intranet as task management applications.
- Everyone I talked to on the subject seemed to validate that social tools need to add content management or Vica Versa if you are a CMS vendor. Our embeddable comments feature received an ovation during the demo portion of the roadmap and that also seems to validate this.
- There was a surprising lack of passion around social bookmarking tools.
Overall we received votes back from 91 of attendees and I’m looking forward to taking this exercise to a broader audience online in the future. Thanks to everyone that contributed!

Is there a summary of the various presentations given at in.Telligent anywhere for those who were unable to attend to catch up with.
(btw, if you have any customers desperate, I have seen a third party Ideas Application written for CS by a Telligent Partner - can't remember the url off the top of my head but I can try and dig it out for you if you want.

@ Josh - does that mean that we will finally get calendars in the foreseeable future?
@ Shauna - when will this happen? And is it not possible for clients to receive this in advance too???

The CS Ideas Addon we've released is just V1, we've got some interesting features up our sleeves that will be launched in coming version.
The addon plays nice with CS 2008 & 2008.5.
Feel free to contact me to learn more.

I'm surprised that Chat services was only at 9%. If I could spend the $100, it would be Content Management ($30), Calendaring ($20), Mobile ($20), Chat ($20), Ideas ($5), Profile Enhancements ($5).
As LLiu says "Content is Queen, Community is King".
The first $50 to help with building content, the second $50 to help with building community.

I love that, Community is really the true king!

Joey,
I'd like to know more, but can't seem to find an email address to put my questions to someone about the ideas add-on.
Cheers

Social bookmarking only getting 5% allocation? I know from working in several large corporations that social bookmarking is a seriously needed feature in the enterprise, especially with all the web site sprawl that happens over time. If Telligent are serious about appealing to the large enterprises, then they will have to give more serious consideration to adding a social bookmarking feature. Navigation links to little known information can give real value to businesses.

@MGR - I don't disagree with you. I was pretty shocked with the results, but realize that it may have been in part the audience at In.Telligent and partially how the questions where asked that may have led to this.
